Ottawa Rap Artist Kool Krys Empowers Women with Music Video and Wonder Woman Tribute Album: #FEMINUM

OTTAWA – May 5, 2017 – Ottawa rap artist Kool Krys (Christina Devine) will be releasing her fourth album FEMINUM, produced and arranged by Juno-nominated producer and Chops Mag Creator Bix on Friday, May 26, 8pm in Ottawa at Kinki Lounge and Kitchen.

Kool Krys’ FEMINUM album is a tribute to female empowerment and Wonder Woman legacy, aligning with the June 2nd release of the Wonder Woman movie in theatres — the first major studio film featuring a female superhero, directed by female director Patty Jenkins.

Ten years after Kool Krys’ first album The Return of Diana Prince, her fourth album FEMINUM highlights Wonder Woman’s 75 year legacy in pop culture, comics and longevity, inspiring the next generation of girls.

Kool Krys’ music video for the FEMINUM album single Amazon Hot Wax, directed and produced by Ottawa Vlogger, Blogger and Digital Marketer Toni van Eeden, showcases talented women in hip hop, arts and Ottawa’s dynamic entrepreneurial community. The official video will be released on Friday, May 12 — two weeks in advance of Kool Krys’ FEMINUM album release show at Kinki.

“Behind every successful woman is inspiration from other successful women,” says Christina Devine. “My passion is connecting female artists, entrepreneurs and businesses with each other to amplify opportunities for career and personal development.”

Born and raised in Ottawa, Kool Krys (Christina Devine) moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2003 to pursue her Bachelor’s in Sociology and Contemporary Studies at the University of King’s College. While in Halifax, she established herself as a prominent member of the local hip hop scene. As a youth mentor with the Girls Empowerment Mentoring Program (GEM), dance instructor and radio co-host of the show Wax Museum on Dalhousie University’s CKDU 88.1 FM, Kool Krys demonstrated her commitment early on as a positive role model for young women.

Kool Krys has since been featured on national radio and TV programs, including CBC Radio’s Bandwidth, Ottawa Morning and All in a Day, college radio, international music blogs and The Polish Review on Rogers Television.

Kool Krys performed on CBC Radio One’s All In a Day with Alan Neal during CBC Ottawa’s Share Central 2011 Holiday Fundraiser, which raised over $25K in support of Operation Come Home. In 2012, Kool Krys and Bix toured with Buck 65 on his 20 Odd Years Tour across Canadian cities, performing at sold-out concerts. Kool Krys and Bix also performed in the 2012 JUNOFest rap showcase in Ottawa at Babylon Nightclub.

While living in Toronto for a few years and contributing to local music blogs, Kool Krys mentored teenage girls by teaching songwriting with Girls Rock Camp Mississauga, which provides a positive environment designed to nurture self-esteem and self-expression in girls.

In 2015, Kool Krys performed at Ottawa’s House of PainT Festival of Arts & Culture and Montreal’s Under Pressure Graffiti Festival in 2016. Christina currently works as a publicist in the local arts community supporting communications and community engagement for House of PainT’s annual festival that draws 10,000 attendees each year and features more than 200 national artists at Dunbar Bridge near Carleton University, celebrating and elevating urban art and expression in our nation’s capital.

For Immediate Release

Canada Loves Dilla Tour
March 9-26, 2017

Ottawa, ON – J Dilla (James Dewitt Yancey) is one of hip hop’s greatest producers and musicians of all time. His music and production for artists including Janet Jackson, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and Busta Rhymes continues to resonate in cities across Canada.

To recognize Dilla’s hard-hitting instrumentals and exceptional contribution to hip hop culture, local hip hop communities across Canada will celebrate his life and legacy from March 9-26 with a series of local shows featuring a lineup of Detroit artists and performers who have been influenced by Dilla’s impactful music — some with a direct connection to Dilla as family members and friends. A portion of the profits from the Canada Loves Dilla Tour shows will be donated to the J Dilla Foundation.
Canada Loves Dilla Tour Artists/Performers:
Illa J (DT/MTL): John Derek Yancey is the younger brother of the late legendary hip hop producer and rapper J Dilla from Detroit. Dankery was present throughout Dilla’s creative process when Dilla produced music for the likes of Pharcyde, Erykah Badu and Common and many other successful hip hop and R&B artists.
DJ Spinna (NYC): An anomaly in music and humbling example of what it takes to truly succeed within the framework of multiple fields, with a steadfast work ethic, an obsessively extensive vinyl library and the willingness to pursue the full extents of his roots (Funk, Soul R&B and Jazz), foundation (Hip-Hop) and future (Electronic/Dance music) without any restraints.
