Herstory 101: Girls Rock Camp Mississauga 2012

In 2001 the first Rock N’ Roll Camp for Girls was held in Portland, Oregon. 10 years later camps exist all over North America and Europe… with the movement growing in Toronto this August.

I am honoured to be invited to lead a hip hop lyric writing workshop at Girls Rock Camp Mississauga (GRCM). Twenty-five aspiring young female musicians will learn from an array of inspiring female artists to form 5 bands over 5 days (Aug. 13-17). As a member of the international Girls Rock Camp Alliance, GRCM will participate in a global mandate to empower girls and women through music education fostering self-esteem and confidence.

Girls aged 8-16 will participate in workshops covering key aspects of the music business: instrument instruction in guitar, bass, keys or drums; songwriting; band t-shirt design; stage presence; and media awareness. The rocker girls will write original songs to be performed at the Girls Rock Camp Showcase on the final night of camp, Friday, Aug. 17 (details below) and a second showcase the following week, Amphitheatre Unplugged: Girls Who Rock on Wednesday, Aug. 22 (details below).
